Police at Auki in Malaita Province have arrested a 21-year-old male person for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl at Fulisango Village in Central Kwara’ae on 6 October 2018.
Police arrested the suspect on 18 October 2018.
The alleged rape incident happened in the evening of 6 October 2018 when the victim was on her way back to her house after watching movies at a nearby residence.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Malaita Province, Superintendent Timothy Apaesi says, “It is alleged that the victim was on her way back home when she met the suspect. The suspect allegedly got hold of her and led her to a road side and allegedly had sexual intercourse with her.”
PPC Apaesi says, “After the alleged act was committed, the victim went home. Upon arrival at her parents’ residence the mother of the victim noticed that her daughter was bleeding heavily and so they rushed her to Kilu’ufi Hospital where she was medically examined.
Superintendent Apaesi says, “The doctor confirmed that the victim had sexual intercourse with someone (male) and that was the moment the parents knew of what had happened to their daughter.”
He adds: “The matter was reported to police after which an investigation into the matter began. The suspect was on the run from the police until yesterday Thursday 18 October 2018 when my officers went to his village and had discussions with his parents and the relatives of the suspect to surrender himself to the police.”
“Following the discussions, the suspect surrendered himself and was brought to police at Auki where he was dealt,” says PPC Apaesi.”
Mr Apaesi says, “It is a sad incident to occur in our community. I call on youth, community and women leaders, chiefs and church elders to work together to discourage such behaviour in our communities. Police will not tolerate such behaviour but will prosecute such incidents.”
The suspect will appear in the Auki Magistrates Court on 2 November 2018.
